W03 | Weekly report - Demo
Posted by poison, January 20, 2018

The title screen of #TurnItOn advertises "demo build" and not prototype anymore. Take it as a milestone, although more changes were done under the hood than visible.

Following Tim Ruswick's Game Dev channel I watched a video about prototypes and rapid prototyping that made me realize that I still call my baby a prototype. Yeah, it's not an alpha yet but surely more than a proof of concept (Thank you, HappyGo Games for your suggestion!). That is the reason behind the change on the main screen.

More importantly, the game got 2 more levels. The goal of 15-20 levels for each setting is closer every day! This week I prepared the game for settings: save data contains language setting + music and sound volume from now on. Volume is controllable from code even if you can't test yet. Speaking of sounds, you might hear a few new samples as the first pack of sound effects arrived from Strayboom. Thank you, Laci! It needed some coding too as playing looped noises on a wheel for example is not a simple play/stop execution at all.

I have decided to share info about background activities too. At least it's a good way to take notes for myself whenever I look back and even you might get insight how much more work is invisible at all. So I'm constantly looking for how to get my job known to the potential audience. Having a talk with my friend, Krisztian Marta, a talented and smart marketer I had to face that I simply can't reach customers directly, at least not on my budget. I have to look for influencers - mostly Youtube channel operators and gaming news sites. As I did a market research earlier (competing apps, prices, platforms, authors' websites, etc.) now I started looking for Youtubers testing those competing apps. I'm working on a database of potential contacts. I don't want to spam every possible blogger and news site just the real targets which are really interested in puzzle games like #TurnItOn. Another experience of the week is the analytics of my web page that seems to be visited more likely from mobile, so I have to think on screen size responsiveness that was avoided before.

I think this post has enough crap for now. Download the latest build on itch.io and see you next week!
